WHY AND HOW TO STUDY BROWN BEARS?

Once, brown bears could be found all-over Europe but they were wiped from most of these parts by humans. Starting in the 1970s, conservation oriented politics and law-making enabled the protection of numerous animal and plant species; among them, the brown bear. Nowadays, brown bears are abundant again in some areas in Europe, such as Northern Europe and Southeast Europe. Due to this fact, regular monitoring of the numbers of bears for management and research became necessary. But also because brown bears play an important role in wildlife research and conservation, as umbrella speciese, keystone species and indicator species. When it comes to research of wild animals, brown bears scientists have always been at the forefront in developing and testing new methods. In this webinar, I will give you some glimpses into this exciting developing world of science!
